The Former President's Woke Alarm Overlooks Europe's True Threat: Technological Stagnation.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and so-called "woke" agendas represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this perspective rests on a fundamental misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing Europe is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

The Stark Growth Divide Separating Europe and the US

The data reveal a sobering contrast. From 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% increase for the EU. During this time, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, about half of the global 50 largest technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Problem

This widening economic gap is driven by superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly American. Over the past five decades, hundreds of American startups have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital issue: As the competition for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Experts widely agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of Europe's Technological Lag

A number of key factors explain this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and more dynamic system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which limits the scale of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are reasons for optimism. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market point to the necessity of sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, Europe's strengths might enable much higher levels of commercial innovation.

Europe retains considerable advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could unleash a surge of venture creation.

Crucially, even if Europe does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. However, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could turn into a sudden and irreversible loss of world influence.
