Critical Role Season Four Reveals the Fighters Table

Ever since the premiere of the fourth campaign, recently appointed game master Brennan Lee Mulligan has maintained audience suspense with extensive world-building, a wide array of characters, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, demons, and dark forces growing in influence within Dol-Makjar.

Note: Spoilers for the latest installment of Campaign 4 follow below.

The Soldiers Table Revealed

The third episode concluded with a huge suspense moment and revealed the premier party of heroes who will branch out from the main group to embark on their separate journey, apart from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes the determined fighter (brought to life by Travis), Thimble (the talented performer), Tyranny (the cast member), Wicander Halovar (the player), and Kattigan (the actor).

Dividing the Cast

With an extensive roster, it was clear from the start that having everyone at one table would be unworkable.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, weaving together the characters’ stories before splitting into three smaller tables: Soldiers, Strategists, and Questers.

What Defines the Soldiers Table

According to the Dungeon Master, the Soldiers table is for participants who prefer a classically intense combat and conflict-driven gameplay experience where diplomatic options are rare.

At first glance, characters like the hesitant healer the cleric might look unsuited, but the events of the latest installment make it clear why these five characters are best suited for the combat party.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the group has a clear idea where to head next after a brutal opening clash with the antagonists.

A former ally of the deceased character—whose death kicked off the narrative’s action—manipulated the enemy for his selfish purposes, entering Thjazi’s hideout, assaulting Thimble, and swiping all the magical artifacts to sell off.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and fled to a fortified location in the remote area, above the urban center, with Cyd Pridesire close behind.

Character Drivers

Secondly, each adventurer has a personal reason to exit the metropolitan area:

  • Thimble, as the close ally and best friend, seeks revenge.
  • Kattigan has experience in Timmony and warns that it is a hostile location.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having defied his family’s wishes to kill Teor and instead saved him, have nowhere else to go.
  • However, their reputation as prominent individuals in the powerful family could help the party access places they typically wouldn’t be able to.
  • Furthermore, Teor vowed a eternal obligation to The cleric for his deliverance and will now accompany him everywhere.

Fugitives

Lastly, all of them are wanted by the rulers that control the city for a range of causes, making lingering locally too risky:

  • The rogue and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and Wicander turned against the influential house and the legion of demons they are allied with.
  • The target is wanted dead by House Halovar.

This means them no alternative but to travel to the remote area in quest for the antagonist.

Future Episodes

From the latest episode’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the other eight players to assemble the Questers and Planners parties.

Fans can anticipate learning which adventurers will be where in Campaign 4’s final introductory chapter, streaming live on the upcoming Thursday.
